IAA MOBILITY Voices: Interview 3D Mapping Solutions
3D Mapping Solutions GmbH, founded in 2007, based in Holzkirchen, Germany, and Pittsburgh, USA, is specialized in high-precision kinematic surveying of road networks, racetracks and proving-grounds and is global leader in this automotive field. The highly accurate data is used to create digital twins of the road corridor, in particular HD reference maps, high-resolution road surface models and 3D environment models. The digital twins are used in a large variety of automotive applications, especially for development, testing and validation of ADAS functions in simulation, driving simulators and the autonomous vehicle itself. 3D Mapping has established a worldwide database for simulation, containing a large variety of representative road networks.
What does "Experience Connected Mobility" mean to you?
3D Mapping specializes in providing high-precision reference maps. These are one of the foundations for "Experience Connected Mobility" and are used for intelligent shuttle systems that could form the backbone of variable, networked mobility in the future, for instance. The highly accurate reference maps also serve as a basis for simulation applications in development or as a reference for real-time situational images for teleoperation applications in an operations center. For example, 3D Mapping provided the map basis for the Tempus project in the Munich area or for the PLIMOS project in Grafing.
What do you hope to achieve at IAA MOBILITY 2023?
3D Mapping hopes to increase awareness and attract new customers.
Which essential topic of the future receives too little attention from the public?
There is paid too little attention to the creation of digital twins and the associated networking of data sets. For example, intelligent, variable mobility requires the creation of highly accurate reference maps, the linking of geo-information to these maps (e.g. population information, public transport), and real-time information (traffic lights, traffic jams, road works, etc.). There is a lack of awareness of this issue and a lack of competence on the part of the public authorities. If these issues are not resolved, there will be no connected mobility.
In which area of mobility do you see the greatest potential and where do you see the greatest need to catch up?
The greatest need for improvement is in public transportation: The goal is to create an attractive offer, compared to individual transportation. This requires variable, innovative concepts (e.g. modern, autonomous shuttles instead of old (diesel) low-floor articulated buses). The greatest potential lies in the intelligent networking of all modes of transportation, from private vehicles and air taxis to electric scooters for the last mile.
IAA MOBILITY is the leading global mobility platform. It connects innovators from all spectrums of mobility. Who do you want to network with in September and why?
We want to network with our core customers, i.e. car manufacturers, suppliers and mobility providers, e.g. for shuttle systems.
The world is fundamentally changing. Innovation and the endeavors in the mobility sector are bigger than ever before. What is your vision of the world in 20 years?
Variable, intelligent mobility without ideological barriers, i.e. autonomous cars and trucks where they are indispensable or most efficient, and variable concepts in conurbations so that all road users reach their destination as efficiently, quickly and safely as possible.
