This marks the company’s first "Made in Europe" production milestone and is a key component of a broader strategy to establish local manufacturing. By building vehicles within the region, the group aims to mitigate import tariffs and reduce supply chain costs.

László Botka, the Mayor of Szeged, confirmed the start of pilot production in late January 2026. While full-scale series production is slated for the second quarter of 2026, the project is slightly behind the original year-end 2025 target. However, it remains "on track" relative to the company’s broader goals. At the IAA MOBILITY show in September 2025, BYD had expressed its intent to begin production before the end of the year; that milestone has now been reached in January 2026 with the start of trial operations.
The Szeged plant is designed to eventually reach an annual capacity of approximately 200,000 vehicles. This volume is central to BYD’s European growth strategy, allowing the company to manufacture EVs "in Europe, for Europe" rather than importing them from China and incurring additional duties.
The facility currently employs around 960 people, a mix of local specialists and international experts supporting the production ramp-up. The workforce is expected to grow steadily over the coming years as production volumes increase.
The first model expected to roll off the assembly line is the BYD Dolphin Surf (known in China as the BYD Seagull). As BYD announced at IAA MOBILITY 2025, the Dolphin Surf is set to "lead the charge" for the brand’s European-built lineup.
