In its latest Electric mobility Report, the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) at the University of Applied Sciences (FHDW) in Bergisch Gladbach examined the recent production innovations introduced by major global manufacturers in the battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sector.
The CAM Report Assigned an Innovation Score to Each Manufacturer
Each innovation was assigned a score based on its maturity, originality, customer value, and degree of innovation. In the latest analysis, which covers innovations from 2021 through 2025, the Chinese conglomerate Geely, the Volkswagen Group, and BYD rank among the world’s most innovative manufacturers in the electric vehicle sector.
The CAM report evaluated technological advancements across the entire powertrain—ranging from battery technologies, efficiency gains, and charging performance to ADAS systems, software functions, and connected vehicle services. According to the report, alongside Geely and BYD, other Chinese groups such as SAIC and NIO are also among the top innovators in the electromobility sector.

Volkswagen Group Among the Top 3 Innovative Manufacturers
At the same time, German car manufacturers have significantly boosted their innovative strength in the field of electromobility in recent years and are increasingly establishing themselves as the second strongest force: Volkswagen also achieved high innovation scores, benefiting from a broad BEV strategy featuring platforms like the MEB and numerous production innovations, such as high-performance charging and range solutions. While Volkswagen maintains a steady second-place ranking, BMW and Mercedes have climbed 8 and 4 places respectively compared to the previous period
The analysis also highlights the correlation between innovation strength and sales of battery-electric vehicles: manufacturers that innovate heavily tend to achieve higher BEV sales figures. Overall, the CAM report shows that global e-mobility is currently being significantly shaped by a combination of Chinese companies and established German manufacturers.
