Interview
with Julien PlenchetteChief Technology Officer & Global Operations Excellence at TI Automotive

1. What key trends do you see currently shaping the development of your field?

Change, transformation and progress have all been constants in the history of automotive.  And from the Ford Model T until today, we have evolved and transformed with the industry.  Our success as a Tier 1 is built on a track record of providing the solutions our customers need today – and investing in the solutions to tomorrow’s problems too.  Our propulsion agnostic portfolio is a huge advantage in this respect – the industry is at a crossroads on electrification, adoption has slowed, and the role for transitional technologies is growing. Moreover, the need to reduce vehicle weight regardless of powertrain has always been a consistent feature of our industry.  However the industry evolves, our role will be to enable our customers to grow and succeed.

2. How important is the IAA MOBILITY as a platform to drive forward innovative ideas and collaborations?

IAA MOBILITY is one of the few occasions when the entire mobility ecosystem pauses, gathers, and compares notes in person. In a single venue we can test our ideas with OEMs, regulators, and partners – then leave with a renewed sense of where the industry is heading and who shares our priorities.

The automotive industry has never been so dynamic as it is today, with significant market differentiation across regions challenging OEMs‘ global platform strategies.  Geopolitical dynamics have also destabilized global supply chain resilience. And we also have market and regulatory changes.  All of this is contributing to turmoil in powertrain and electronic architectures.  For that reason, a show like IAA is an opportunity for the global automotive industry to meet and compare approaches.

3. What projects will you like to showcase at the IAA MOBILITY?

We will be presenting our combined product portfolio for the first time in Europe, showcasing several innovative products which already occupy market leadership positions in North America. For example, our extensive range of washer systems, including our patented camera and sensor cleaning systems for ADAS systems tailored to optimize flowrate and performance.

Additionally, as the role for transitional technologies in the transition grows, we are ideally placed to serve OEMs with our pressurized fuel tanks for hybrids and range extender electric vehicles.  Indeed, with our focus on a bold renewal of fuel technologies to address the need to support a longer transition to full electrification than expected, we may be viewed as a disruptor.

4. How can the IAA MOBILITY help make sustainable technologies and approaches accessible to a wider audience?

Progress on sustainability accelerates when complex technologies become visible and understandable. By placing emerging solutions side by side with discussions on policy and financing, IAA MOBILITY helps to turn abstract targets into practical options that business leaders, policymakers, and consumers can all grasp.

5. In what ways do you work with OEMs to accelerate the implementation of innovations in vehicles?

We partner with our customers in a variety of ways including through our deep relationships across our commercial and engineering teams and global network of Technology Centers.  Our e-Mobility Innovation Centers also mean we are ideally positioned to provide OEMs with one-stop shops to tackle their thermal management challenges and accelerate speed to market.
