ZF Friedrichshafen AG and the BMW Group have signed an extensive, long-term supply and development agreement for drivetrain systems, aiming to bolster shared technological solutions for the future of mobility. The multi-billion dollar contract is set to run through the late 2030s. At its core, the partnership focuses on the advancement of cutting-edge drivetrain components, including a redesigned generation of 8-speed automatic transmissions designed to support both internal combustion and electrified powertrains.

Modernized Transmission Tech for Electrified Vehicles 

A key pillar of this collaboration is the further development of the industry-standard 8-speed automatic transmission. Working in close coordination with BMW, this drivetrain module will be re-engineered to meet future electrification requirements and efficiency standards. The goal is to provide customers with a high-performance, high-efficiency transmission capable of handling the demands of tomorrow’s powertrain concepts. 

By combining proven mechanical hardware with advanced digital control systems, both partners are ensuring they can offer competitive, versatile drivetrains even as the industry pivots toward electrification.
