The South Korean automotive supplier Hyundai Mobis is significantly expanding its portfolio of electric drive systems, aiming to cover all classes of electric vehicles with its own Power Electric (PE) systems. Following the development of a 250 kW high-performance drive, the company has now introduced a new universal 160 kW drive system. Additionally, Hyundai Mobis is working on a compact 120 kW version for smaller electric vehicles.

According to Hyundai Mobis, the new 160 kW PE system was specifically designed as a versatile electric drive. With an output equivalent to approximately 215 hp, it is intended to suit most current electric vehicles in the high-volume segment. When the system is combined on both the front and rear axles, the total output can be doubled accordingly.
The so-called PE system integrates the electric motor, inverter, and reduction gear into a single compact unit, effectively taking over the role of a traditional internal combustion engine powertrain.
Despite its universal design, Hyundai Mobis reports that it has significantly improved the system's performance. The "specific power"—the power-to-weight ratio—has increased by approximately 16 percent, while the overall volume of the system has been reduced by nearly 20 percent.
This was made possible through a more modular design, standardized components, and new cooling technologies for the electric motor. Furthermore, Hyundai Mobis is utilizing highly efficient power semiconductors within the power module.
