BYD Unveils Second-Generation Blade Battery with Ultra-Fast Charging

Chinese EV and battery giant BYD has debuted the second generation of its Blade Battery, signaling a massive leap toward eliminating "range anxiety" through extreme charging speeds. During the reveal, the company demonstrated a staggering charging performance, taking a battery from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes.

This next-generation pack builds on the proven Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry that BYD has utilized across its lineup since 2020. The second-gen Blade Battery is paired with new "Flash Charging" technology. When used with BYD’s proprietary ultra-fast charging stations, the battery can handle an unprecedented 10C discharge/charge rate. In theory, a 10C rate allows a battery to be fully replenished in roughly six minutes, potentially making "refueling" an EV as fast as filling up a gas tank.

Real-world reliability in harsh climates remains a core focus. Even in extreme cold at –4°F (–20°C), the system can reportedly charge from 20% to 97% in under 12 minutes.

Beyond raw speed, BYD is pushing the envelope on energy density to extract more miles per pound. The company projects that standard future models will achieve ranges of up to 482 miles (777 km), while high-performance flagship vehicles could exceed the 620-mile (1,000 km) mark on a single charge.
