BMW plans to introduce new navigation-guided driver assistance features for urban driving in Germany starting in 2027. The systems are designed to enable continuous SAE Level 2 partially automated driving from highways and rural roads into city traffic for the first time. With active route guidance through BMW Maps, the technology will assist with turning, lane changes, right-of-way situations, and navigating roundabouts. According to the manufacturer, the required approval tests in real-world traffic have already been successfully completed.
Navigation-Guided Driver Assistance for Urban Traffic
The new features expand BMW's existing Highway and City Assistant. While the system already supports automated stopping and starting at traffic lights in Germany, additional driving maneuvers along the navigation route will become possible in the future.
These include turning, urban lane changes, handling right-of-way situations, and navigating roundabouts. The system relies on active route guidance through BMW Maps.
The features are designed to comply with SAE Level 2 requirements. Drivers must therefore remain attentive at all times, monitor traffic conditions, and be ready to intervene when necessary. The system monitors whether the driver is maintaining the required level of attention.

BMW Symbiotic Drive Enables Cooperative Control
A key component of the new driver assistance features is BMW Symbiotic Drive. The technology is designed to allow drivers to influence the vehicle's behavior through steering, braking, or acceleration, even when the assistance system is active.
The system also takes factors such as the driver's gaze direction and steering behavior into account. For example, the lane-keeping assistant is designed to issue warnings or make corrective interventions only when it detects an unintended lane departure or a potential collision.
The driver assistance features will also be integrated into BMW Panoramic iDrive. A new 3D navigation view combines route guidance, information about the vehicle's surroundings, and the current status of the driver assistance system on the central display.

Introduction Across Multiple BMW Model Series Starting in 2027
The new features are initially planned for Germany, with additional countries to follow gradually.
According to BMW, the necessary hardware is installed as standard in the new BMW iX3 and iX4 models, as well as in all variants of the BMW 3 Series, 7 Series, and X5. This will allow the features to be activated even after the vehicle has been purchased. The required software will be delivered through over-the-air updates.
Approval is based on the updated UNECE Regulation R171 (DCAS Series 2). According to BMW, an independent technical service has successfully completed the required tests on public roads. However, regulatory approval is still pending and is targeted for early 2027.
