Following their initial announcement at IAA MOBILITY in September 2025, BMW and E.ON have officially launched their jointly developed bidirectional Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) solution in Germany. Residential customers can now order the complete product package—comprising the new BMW Wallbox Professional, the E.ON "ÖkoStrom Home & Drive V2G" tariff (including a feed-in contract), and the necessary smart meter. This milestone marks the first time private EV owners can actively integrate their vehicles into the national power grid.

The program initially targets "Neue Klasse" vehicles featuring 6th-generation BMW eDrive technology, starting with the new BMW iX3. These models are capable of more than just drawing power; they can discharge stored energy from their high-voltage batteries back into the public grid. This bidirectional energy transfer is managed by an intelligent algorithm that automates charging and discharging cycles.

A key highlight of the program is the financial incentive: customers earn a bonus for every hour their vehicle is plugged into the Wallbox with V2G activated. This incentive can reach up to €720 per year—even if no actual energy transfer occurs during that time. In theory, this allows BMW iX3 owners to offset their home charging costs to the point of driving up to 14,000 kilometers (approx. 8,700 miles) per year "for free." Additionally, the first 100 iX3 customers to sign up for the E.ON V2G tariff will receive a one-time €700 discount on the BMW Wallbox Professional.

The 11 kW BMW Wallbox Professional is among the first bidirectional models on the market. It is fully controllable via the My BMW App, allowing users to set charging targets, track their bonus balance, and activate battery-protection features. Owners of other BMW and MINI models aren't left behind; parallel options featuring cost-optimized charging plans and overnight bonuses are available to help drivers reduce home charging expenses and simplify their entry into energy market integration.
