The BMW Group has produced the first pre-production units of the new BMW i3 at its home plant in Munich. This production launch marks the beginning of the final preparation phase ahead of the official series production start in the second half of 2026. This is the first time a BMW i3 has been manufactured entirely at the Munich plant, utilizing state-of-the-art manufacturing technology and digitally integrated processes.

As part of the pre-production operations, the new i3 models pass through every stage of production at the modernized facility. This includes the press shop, the new body shop, the paint shop, the assembly lines, and logistics. Over the coming months, insights gained from this initial rollout will be used to further refine processes and ensure a seamless start to full-scale series production.
The Munich plant features a unique operational setup: previously, a team from the Munich facility worked alongside the nearby pilot plant to assemble the first vehicles at the Research and Innovation Center. With the completion of the plant's new production and logistics areas, the vehicles now undergo all production steps on-site. This means that all logistics processes, production equipment, and workflows must already be running smoothly. Even though production volumes remain low for now, all components are being supplied through the designated material flows and processed directly on the line.
