The German company Tovion has unveiled an electrically powered passenger car trailer designed to actively support electric vehicles during towing. The trailer features its own electric drive system and an integrated battery, which is intended to significantly reduce the range loss typically seen when towing.

According to Tovion, the trailer automatically detects when the towing vehicle accelerates or brakes and adjusts its electric motors accordingly. This lightens the load on the towing vehicle while simultaneously improving driving stability and efficiency.
The technology is based on an electrified axle system with its own power electronics and battery unit. The system is designed to be compatible with both electric cars and conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. The target audience includes caravan users, tradespeople, and recreational customers with high transport needs.

In addition to supporting driving operations, the trailer can also serve as a mobile power source. Integrated power outlets can be used to supply external devices or camping equipment. Furthermore, Tovion is reportedly exploring bidirectional use cases for external energy storage.
For example, the modular system allows for battery capacities to be implemented in 25 kWh increments, with the range depending entirely on the assist settings and how it pairs with the towing vehicle. Different configurations can be set up here to optimize for each specific type of use.
