1. What key trends do you see currently shaping the development of your field?

In trade fair logistics, two key trends are having the strongest impact right now: sustainability and digitalization. Both are not only responses to global challenges but also drivers of innovation and efficiency across the industry.

The trade fair and events sector is under increasing pressure to operate more sustainably. In logistics, this means:

  • Reducing CO₂ emissions: using low-emission transport (HVO fuel / e-trucks), route optimization, and consolidated shipments.
  • Minimizing waste: reusable packaging, resource-efficient materials, and recycling concepts.
  • Green warehousing: storage facilities powered by sustainable energy and optimized warehouse technology.
  • Certifications & reporting: customers increasingly demand proof of sustainable logistics processes (e.g., ISO 14001, CO₂ footprint calculations).

These measures are not only environmentally sound but also economically relevant, as they often lead to cost savings and reputational gains.

At the same time, digitalization is transforming the entire value chain — from planning through execution:

  • Transparency & tracking: real-time shipment tracking and automated status updates.
  • Data-driven planning: using AI and big data to forecast transport needs.
  • Platform solutions: digital booking systems, customer portals, and automated communication between trade fair organizers, exhibitors, and logistics providers.

Both trends — sustainability and digitalization — are closely linked. Digital tools, for example, support sustainable decision-making through CO₂ calculators or digital route optimization.

2. How important is the IAA MOBILITY as a platform to drive forward innovative ideas and collaborations?
Over the past few years, IAA MOBILITY has evolved into one of the most important platforms for the mobility sector — and it also plays a central role for trade fair logistics in advancing innovation and collaboration.

  • IAA MOBILITY 2025 is described as a “performance show of innovations.” It brings together leading automakers, tech giants, startups, and mobility service providers — offering a unique opportunity to experience new technologies and concepts live.
  • Key topics include autonomous driving, software-defined vehicles, battery technology, and micromobility. This diversity makes the event a true innovation engine for the entire industry.

3. What specific logistics measures is Kuehne+Nagel implementing at IAA MOBILITY to promote sustainability and efficiency?
At IAA MOBILITY, Kuehne+Nagel is implementing targeted measures that combine ecological responsibility with technological innovation. One example is the use of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) fuel:

  • Compatibility: HVO can be used in many diesel engines without modification — either pure or as a blend.
  • Emissions: Compared to fossil diesel, CO₂ emissions can be reduced by up to 90%, depending on feedstock and production method.
  • Storage: HVO is more stable than biodiesel (FAME) and has a longer shelf life, making it particularly attractive for logistics.

4. How does digitalization – for example, through platforms like myFairLOG – help optimize complex trade fair logistics?
myFairLOG is a web-based logistics platform designed specifically for trade fairs and events. In 2024, it was recognized by UFI (Global Association of the Exhibition Industry) as a best practice example.

  • Online booking of logistics services: Exhibitors, organizers, and service providers can book services such as forklifts, loading and unloading, or empties storage directly online — anytime, anywhere.
  • Real-time tracking & transparency: Every order can be tracked in real time, with cost overviews and time-slot management. This improves planning and reduces waiting times.
  • Automation & efficiency: The platform replaces manual processes with automated workflows, which lowers staffing needs, reduces errors, and speeds up overall logistics.

5. How can the IAA MOBILITY help make sustainable technologies and approaches accessible to a wider audience?
IAA MOBILITY is more than just a trade fair — it is an experiential platform that makes sustainable mobility tangible, understandable, and attractive. By combining innovation with public engagement, it actively contributes to the transformation of mobility.

6. What role does smart traffic flow management play in the success of city-center events like IAA MOBILITY?
Smart traffic management plays a crucial role in the success of large-scale city-center events such as IAA MOBILITY — particularly in a city like Munich, which experiences heavy traffic during the show.

It is not just a technical tool but a strategic success factor, ensuring:

  • Smooth operations
  • Positive visitor experiences
  • Sustainable mobility
  • Efficient use of urban resources

7. What significance does the IAA MOBILITY have as a platform for dialogue between cities, companies, and innovators?
IAA MOBILITY serves as a central platform for dialogue between cities, companies, and innovators — particularly in the context of sustainable and connected mobility.

It is more than an exhibition: it is a think tank and innovation lab that structures and makes visible the exchange of ideas. It actively contributes to ensuring that sustainable mobility is not only envisioned but also shaped collaboratively.

8. What logistical challenges does a public event format like the Open Space bring – and how do you address them as a logistics partner?
Hosting an event like the IAA Open Space — right in the heart of Munich’s city center — brings a range of complex logistical challenges. As a logistics partner, we address them with tailored concepts and digital control systems.

1. Access & traffic management

  • Public squares such as Marienplatz or Odeonsplatz are heavily frequented.
  • With no fixed loading zones or parking spaces, timed access permits and precise delivery windows must be organized.
  • A key lever for efficiency and sustainability is our digital slot management system, seamlessly linked to our FairLOG IT solution and truck guidance system.
  • Planned deliveries: Trucks book delivery slots online. Once the vehicle enters the grounds or Open Space, the assigned forklift is automatically dispatched.
  • Minimizing empty runs: Linked with FairLOG STM, forklifts immediately receive new tasks after unloading — for example, collecting empties on the return trip.
  • Efficient on-site coordination: The system reduces waiting times and unnecessary trips while improving safety and sustainability.

2. Safety & permitting

  • Every vehicle, crane, or forklift movement must be coordinated with the organizer.
  • Access controls and safety protocols are required to separate visitors and delivery traffic.

3. Storage & interim parking

  • No materials can be stored outside the booked stand area — whether empties or equipment.
  • This requires precise delivery planning, often using just-in-time concepts.

4. Urban compatibility

  • Logistics must be quiet, low-emission, and space-efficient to protect residents’ quality of life.
  • Public concerns and political debates highlight how sensitive the issue is.

With these measures, we ensure smooth, sustainable, and intelligent logistics even under the challenging conditions of a city-center Open Space format.
